About
The James E. Cloern Early Career Publication Honor was conceived and is managed by ASLO’s Raelyn Cole Editorial (RCE) Fellows. Originally called the L&O Letters Early Career Publication Honor, the initiative was renamed in 2025 to celebrate the life and legacy of our late colleague Dr. James Cloern, a beloved member of the ASLO community who served as the L&O Letters Editor-in-Chief and Director of the Raelyn Cole Editorial Fellowship from 2019 to 2025. Learn more about Dr. James Cloern here.
Today, the James E. Cloern Early Career Publication Honor supports the publication of innovative research in the aquatic sciences by paying the publication cost of open-access articles authored by Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in need. Additional weight is given to applicants who are currently studying or working in the Global South, from Ukraine, or are members of underrepresented groups in STEM, broadly defined to include race, gender, disability, first-generation, or other identity component. Calls for applications are published every other year on the RCE Fellows X (Twitter) account and other ASLO media.
The award Includes:
- Support from an RCE Fellow with a pre-submission friendly manuscript review and guidance in navigating the submission process.
- Developmental webinars about scientific publishing topics
- Waiver of the $3,700 Author Publication Charges (APC) of an article accepted for publication in Limnology and Oceanography, Limnology and Oceanography: Methods, or Limnology and Oceanography Letters.
- Publicity of accepted papers via ASLO social media.
