Attending an ASLO meeting is a great way to advertise your research and receive constructive feedback from your peers. Conferences also provide the opportunity to learn about emerging topics, new methods, and to network with other scientists.
Student Workshops & Activities
During meetings we host a number of lunch time workshops (link to upcoming bulletin article) geared towards student members. Our most popular workshops include Scientific Speed Networking, Critical Storytelling, Teaching Aquatic Science and other professional development topics.
We also host a mixer early in the meeting for students to meet each other as well as senior scientists. Students are also encouraged to participate in the Meeting Mentors Program, especially if they are first time attendees. Read more about the mentor program in the Nov 2013 ASLO Bulletin.
Student Travel Awards
ASLO offers student travel awards to defray costs of attending an ASLO meeting. Students must be ASLO members who will make oral or poster presentations at the meeting. Previous recipients are not eligible. Recipients are chosen by lottery from the acceptable entries. Look for the travel award application when registering for meetings.
Additionally, ASLO offers a discount on meeting registration to student members to help alleviate the cost of attending meetings.
Undergraduate opportunities: ASLOMP
ASLO is committed to increasing ethnic diversity. The ASLO Multicultural Program uses opportunities provided by ASLO meetings to bring together informed, motivated, experienced, and connected undergraduate and graduate students from under-represented groups interested in pursuing careers in the Aquatic Sciences.
