The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography publishes three peer-reviewed journals: Limnology & Oceanography (L&O), Limnology & Oceanography: Methods (L&O Methods), and Limnology & Oceanography Letters (L&O Letters), as well as the quarterly Limnology & Oceanography Bulletin. While the journals vary in aims and scope, they all serve as fundamental pillars in fulfilling ASLO's mission to "create, integrate, and communicate knowledge across the full spectrum of aquatic sciences” with attention to quality, inclusion, and representation.
ASLO’s journals have grown substantially in impact and reach in recent years. We are happy to report that the three peer-reviewed publications once again rank highly in the fields of limnology and oceanography. ASLO journals retain three of the top six spots in limnology journals, along with two of the top five spots in oceanography journals in 2022.
L&O Letters ranks #1 in limnology and #2 in oceanography (more journal metrics);
L&O ranks #3 in limnology and #5 in oceanography (more journal metrics);
L&O Methods ranks #6 in limnology and #25 in oceanography (more journal metrics).

ASLO President Patricia Glibert says, “We are delighted that ASLO’s portfolio continues to perform well. A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to everyone responsible for this success, including our journal editors, associate editors, staff, peer reviewers, and our authors! By choosing to publish your paper with ASLO, you not only contribute to great science, but you also support students and early-career researchers with professional development programs and many valuable mentorship opportunities.”
ASLO journals go beyond the publication of exceptional scientific research; we are committed to providing authors a positive and enriching publishing experience. Here’s a little of what our recent authors had to say about publishing with us:
“We are very excited to have our manuscript published in the special issue of Limnology and Oceanography Letters. This was my first time submitting a manuscript to the journal and I can only say good things about the review process. I would be happy to submit here again.” - Clara R. Vives, Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Copenhagen
“I appreciate the time and work that editors and reviewers put in. I am impressed by the high-quality reviewing process. Many thanks to everyone involved." - Xin Lin, Associate Professor, State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, Xiamen University
“We really appreciate the comments from reviewers and editors that help to improve this paper! It is a long journey, but I learned a lot throughout this process!” - Nicole Cai, ORISE Fellow, Chesapeake Bay Program, US EPA Region 3
