The position will be associated with a project on characterising an enigmatic marine endosymbiosis in the genus Meringosphaera. These are single-celled eukaryotes that are globally distributed and are considered photosynthetic based on consistent observations of autofluorescent ‘green bodies’ and absence of feeding behaviours. The overarching goals of this two year postdoctoral project are to characterize the genetic integration and metabolic function of the photosynthesizing bodies of Meringosphaera. A suite of single cell methods wil be employed including halogenated in situ-hybridization-secondary ion mass spectromtey (HISH-SIMS), flourescence activated sorting (FACs) for single cell genome and transcriptome sequencing, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The position is a collaborative project between the laboratories of Rachel A Foster from SU and Fabien Burki from UU.
