Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) and San José State University (SJSU) are seeking a field and process oriented biological oceanographer to complement an interdisciplinary group of marine scientists. The ideal candidate will conduct research at sea, possess expertise in molecular techniques, bioinformatics, or big data, and conduct research in one or more of the following areas: primary and export production, microbial ecology, food web dynamics, ecosystem processes, physiology, climate change, or harmful algal blooms.
The successful applicant must have a strong commitment to quality instruction and pursue a vigorous research program involving MS students. A Ph.D. is required and prior post-doctoral experience is encouraged. Applicant materials should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained through cross-cultural study, teaching, training and other comparable experiences.
Instructional duties will include teaching Biological Oceanography (including classical field methods and modern approaches) and other advanced courses in the applicant’s area of expertise (e.g., Molecular Techniques, Instrumentation, etc.). The typical course load is two classes per semester. The candidate is expected to maintain an extramurally funded research program and supervise a vibrant lab of Master’s students.
The successful candidate will be a SJSU faculty member but will be located at the MLML facility, with all or most of their teaching/research conducted at MLML. Due to the remote location of MLML from the consortium campuses, the candidate will serve on a limited number of College or University level committees. We expect the candidate to attend and contribute to MLML faculty meetings that serve as the main institutional-decision making body. These include MLML committees (e.g. space committee, curriculum committee, and the RTP committee) and MLML Board of Governors meetings. Additionally, candidates are expected to attend and assist with laboratory-sponsored events, and lend support during promotional events (Open House, fundraising, etc.).
Faculty members represent the institution and are expected to conduct themselves professionally in all external interactions and be collegial and supportive of other faculty members, staff, and students. The candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation, through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
