A postdoctoral fellow is available examining the impacts of oil sands development on freshwater resources in northeastern Alberta. The research will be focused on combining water quantity and quality datasets from watersheds impacted by oil sands development. Across the oil sands region, Alberta Environment and Parks, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the Water Survey of Canada have partnered to collect a wealth of information including river stage and discharge, water isotopes (δ18O, δ2H), and water quality. Water quality data includes traditional grab samples (measured for a comprehensive suite of physical parameters, major ions, nutrients, metals, and polycyclic aromatic compounds) and continuous (15-minute) measurements of pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity.
The successful candidate will work out of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta under the supervision of Dr. Colin Cooke. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in aquatic biogeochemistry, hydrology, aquatic ecology, or a related field. Ideal qualities include a proven track record of multi-disciplinary research, strong organizational skills, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated success in producing peer-reviewed scientific publications. The post-doctoral appointment will be for one year, potentially renewable for an additional year based on funding availability and performance. The start date for the position is April 1, 2019 or soon after and the salary will be based upon the successful candidate’s experience.
