Postdoctoral Researcher In Imaging Cytometry (closes 3/25/2019)

Postdoctoral researcher in imaging cytometry for microbial oceanography
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to lead integrated studies of the genomes and morphologies of individual microbial cells, which will use and contribute to the development of a novel, imaging flow cytometer, and its integration with droplet microfluidics. We are developing a next-generation fluorescence-activated cell sorter that will capture high-quality images and fluorescence action spectra of the sorted cells, which are subsequently subject to single cell genomics. This new technology will enable deeper insights into the composition and roles of uncultured microbial groups and provide the critical, missing link between the contemporary omics data sets and the long history of cell morphology-based plankton studies. The hired scientist will be co-advised by Drs. Poulton, Stepanauskas and Van den Engh and will be engaged in a research program that involves instrument development and validation, laboratory experiments, field studies and bioinformatics.

The postdoctoral scientists at Bigelow Laboratory have access to an active professional training program and possibilities for undergraduate student mentoring and teaching. Laboratory’s state-of-the-art oceanfront campus is located in scenic Midcoast Maine, which offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking, canoeing, sailing, and skiing.

Candidates must have a PhD degree in a relevant field, prior experience in environmental microbiology, and a demonstrated interest in optics and/or electrical engineering. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work harmoniously in a collaborative research team are crucial. All offers of employment are contingent upon positive results of a background check.

Research will be conducted primarily at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay, Maine. Opportunities for fieldwork may be available but are not required. The position is offered for a period of two years. The position has an expected start date of July 1st, 2019, but this may be negotiated. Salary will be commensurate with prior experience.

Applicants should submit the following to our online application portal:

• A cover letter that contains a statement of research interests
• A detailed curriculum vitae
• Contact information for three references

For full consideration, the application should be submitted by March 25, 2019; applications will be reviewed upon receipt. All applications will be acknowledged upon receipt. Questions can be sent to
