Sustaining Aquatic Ecosystems Under Global Change

The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) and the Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) will again present a joint meeting in 2020. This meeting will be in Madison, Wisconsin at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, 7-12 June.

With over 15,000 lakes, aquatic science has been an emphasis throughout the state that dates back centuries. Several of these lakes are in the Madison area. With this heritage, Madison is a natural location for ASLO-SFS 2020 meeting.

The theme of this meeting is Sustaining Aquatic Ecosystems Under Global Change. Rapid change is a defining feature of the modern era. Increasingly severe threats attributed to global environmental change involve water, including among them scarcity, security, over-appropriation of water resources, extreme hydrological events, accelerating loss of aquatic biodiversity, and overstressed fisheries. Sustaining the aquatic ecosystems that provide fresh water, regulate water flow and quality, and provide habitat for aquatic organisms and biodiversity is thus key to sustaining human welfare and the natural systems that support us. Sustainable solutions—those that work across sectors, societies, nations, and generations—will require major transitions in our thinking about interconnected water systems from headwaters to oceans, and the way they are governed and managed.

The dates of the meeting run from Saturday through Saturday, with the scientific portion beginning with the opening plenary session on Sunday, 7 June, featuring a keynote speaker. A welcome mixer will follow. Concurrent sessions begin on Monday, 8 June and continue with daily plenaries through Friday, 12 June.

Pre-meeting workshops are scheduled during the day on Sunday, the 7th. Other activities include a fun run on Wednesday, 10 June and field trips tentatively set for Saturday, 6 June, as well as Saturday, 13 June. Several receptions are scheduled throughout the week.
