Here is a photo of an internal bore, or bolus, from a lab experiment that I performed with Dan Kelley and Clark Richards at Dalhousie University, as an unplanned part of my LOREX research. I went to Dalhousie to have Dan and Clark help me identify internal wave forms, among other things, in time series data (high-resolution current velocity and temperature profiles) that I had collected above a sloping lakebed. At the onset of our analysis, we decided that a lab experiment might help to build more intuition on the spatial characteristics of these internal wave forms on slopes. Dan just so happened to have a small wave tank for such experiments–something I do not have access to at my home institution. The experiment allowed us to watch internal waves, like the one in the image, shoal and break, which then made it easier to identify similar features in my time series data. This was one of many perks that came from working with Dan and Clark at Dalhousie through the LOREX program.
