For this update, we wanted to better inform you about software for the conference, as well as events peripheral yet pertinent to the scientific sessions.
How do We Interact outside of Science?
Many of you may already be familiar with Gather (widely known as Gather.town), an application that allows you (as a personalized avatar) to interact with others using proximity video and audio chat. In the same way you walk up to a person at a session, you control an avatar to navigate the virtual space. Walk up to others to activate conversation, enabling your video and audio chat capabilities. Gather will be used for all networking events and session breaks, as well as some social events.
OSM2022 will have a variety of enriching and fun events. While we are still planning events, we have a few to highlight for you!
Navigating with the Stars
Current ocean navigation relies heavily on satellite communications and modern technology. For hundreds of years prior, however, Pacific Islanders expertly navigated the vast Past Ocean using non-instrument navigation, using the wind, waves, and stars to chart their courses. For “Navigating with the Stars,” join the Bishop Museum and a Hōkūle’a navigator to explore the ways historical methods of navigation were used, and still are used by modern voyagers.
Yoga Mornings in Waikiki
Start your morning (or punctuate your afternoon or evening) with a relaxing yoga guide and a backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. During these events, follow an instructor on a refreshing yoga routine, guiding you through each movement and pose.
Ocean Sciences 2022 5k Fun Run
The Ocean Sciences 5k Fun Run has been a staple of the Ocean Sciences Meetings for years. This year, the Ocean Sciences 5k Fun Run is a virtual event that can be run or walked from any location you choose—a local trail, the neighborhood road, a mountain or a beach, or a treadmill. Run your own race, at your own pace and time, while staying connected with other running and nature enthusiasts in the Ocean Science Community.
This year, you can also join the Ocean Sciences 5k Fun Run and upload your photo for a chance to win one of many prizes, made in Hawaii, and graciously provided by ProOceanus! To enter, create your own runner’s bib using this template and add in your name, location, and registration ID. Take a photo of yourself and upload with a description for the opportunity to win! The link to upload will be available within the next few weeks.
