<br>
CORAL REEF ECOSYSTEM STUDIES ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY<br>
CLOSES 3 P.M. EST April 17, 2002<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; AGENCY: Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean
Research/Coastal Ocean Program (CSCOR/COP), National Ocean Service
(NOS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),
Department of Commerce.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; ACTION: Notice of Funding Availability for
financial assistance for project grants and cooperative
agreements.<br>
** Access the complete FY 2002 Federal Register Notice for the Coral
Reef Ecosystems Studies Announcement of Opportunity**<br>
http://www.cop.noaa.gov/funding.html<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; SUMMARY: NOAA/NOS/CSCOR/COP is soliciting
three to five year proposals to support coral reef ecosystem studies
in regions under U.S. jurisdiction where coral reefs occur. Proposals
should address<br>
causes of regional declines in coral abundance and degradation of
coral ecosystems. CSCOR/COP's interest is to provide timely and
high-quality scientific results that can be used to develop
alternative management<br>
strategies to restore and protect coral reef ecosystems. To meet this
goal, highest consideration will be given to multi-disciplinary team
proposals incorporating hypothesis-driven research involving both the
natural and<br>
social sciences, which includes participation by the territory, state,
or Federal resource management community. Because of the complex
relationships among land-based activities, watershed/reef
interactions, and local economies and values, the overall research
proposal should include a component study that addresses social and
economic aspects of the study area, and integrate this research into
the study as a whole.<br>

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR TEACHERS (RET)<br>
SUPPLEMENT TO CURRENT NSF AWARDS<br>
<br>
Office of the Assistant Director for Biological Sciences:ES<br>
=46ull program announcement can be found at:<br>
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2002/nsf02090/nsf02090.html<br>
<br>
Dear Colleague:<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This letter is to call your attention to a
new activity that will<br>
support active participation by K-12 teachers<br>
of science in projects funded by the Directorate for Biological
Sciences<br>
at the National Science Foundation.<br>
The intent of this endeavor is to facilitate professional development
of<br>
K-12 science teachers through<br>
research experience at the cutting edge of science. The BIO
Directorate<br>
strongly encourages all its<br>
grantees to make special efforts to identify talented teachers for<br>
participation in this RET-supplement opportunity.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We believe that encouraging active
participation of teachers in on-going<br>
NSF projects is an excellent way<br>
to reach broadly into the teacher talent pool of our nation.&nbsp; The
goal<br>
of the RET-supplement is to help<br>
build long-term collaborative relationships between K-12 teachers
of<br>
science and the NSF research community. The<br>
Directorate for Biological Sciences at NSF is particularly interested
in<br>
encouraging its researchers to<br>
build mutually rewarding partnerships with teachers at inner city<br>
schools and less well endowed school districts.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A request for funding of a RET-supplement
should be made under an<br>
existing NSF award or within<br>
a proposal for a new or renewal NSF award. The description of the<br>
RET-supplement activity should clearly<br>
articulate in some detail the form and nature of the prospective<br>
teacher=92s involvement in the Principal Investigator=92s<br>
ongoing or proposed research. Since it is expected that the<br>
RET-supplement experience will also lead to<br>
transfer of new knowledge to classroom activities, the
RET-supplement<br>
description should also indicate what<br>
sustained follow-up would be provided to help in translating the<br>
teacher=92s research experience into classroom</div>
<div>practice. A brief biographical sketch of the teacher should also
be</div>
<div>included.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The duration of the RET-supplement will
generally be one year and the</div>
<div>project may be carried out during<br>
summer months, during the academic year, or both. For guidance and<br>
inquiries concerning the RET-supplement,<br>
including the application due date, the Principal Investigator
should<br>
consult with the Program Director of<br>
his/her particular NSF award.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The National Science Foundation encourages
you to visit K-12 teachers in your local school district<br>
and region, including those from NSF supported urban efforts, to
make<br>
them aware of this RET-supplement<br>
opportunity as well as other NSF research and educational
projects.<br>
Information on current NSF awards is readily<br>
available on www.nsf.gov/home/grants/grants_awards.htm. We trust
that<br>
your time and efforts will open<br>
and facilitate new avenues for innovations in the teaching of
science,<br>
mathematics, and engineering<br>
and enhance the development of the U.S. science and engineering<br>
workforce.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Sincerely,<br>
Mary E. Clutter<br>
Assistant Director<br>

POSITION AVAILABLE, NORWEGIAN POLAR INSTITUTE<br>
Research Scientist on Sea Ice and Climate Position Available at
NPI<br>
<br>
The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), Polar Climate Program,
invites<br>
applications for a permanent position as research scientist on sea
ice<br>
and climate.<br>
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: 20 April 2002&nbsp;<br>
RESPONSIBILITIES<br>
The successful applicant is expected to conduct research associated
with<br>
the role of sea ice in the climate system. Emphasis should be put
on<br>
large-scale, climate-related physical processes and the modeling
of<br>
such, and to a lesser extent on smaller scale properties and
mechanics<br>
of sea ice. A close collaboration with the oceanographers in the
Polar<br>
Climate Program is expected, especially with ongoing efforts
addressing<br>
the connection between arctic sea ice, freshwater fluxes through
the<br>
=46ram Strait, and deep water formation mechanisms in the Greenland
Sea.<br>
As a part of this work, NPI maintains time series on Fram Strait<br>
freshwater fluxes through permanently deployed moorings and annual<br>
cruises to the area. The institute has also established a
historical<br>
database on sea ice extent in the Nordic Seas. There is
considerable<br>
potential for further research based on these two data sets. The<br>
candidate will have access to supercomputing facilities at the<br>
University of Tromso and will also have excellent opportunities to<br>
participate in cruises and fieldwork.<br>
QUALIFICATIONS<br>
NPI seeks candidates with a strong knowledge of sea ice physics
and<br>
behavior, preferably with a record of research accomplishments on
the<br>
topic of sea ice and climate. Expertise in one or more of the fields
of<br>
numerical modeling, statistical analysis, or remote sensing, is<br>
desirable. Experience of cruises or fieldwork in polar regions and
a<br>
well-developed professional network is also an asset. The ideal<br>
candidate will have a strong commitment to collaborative problem<br>
solving, and will complement the existing strengths of the institute
in<br>
oceanography, paleoceanography, biology, and glaciology. The
applicant<br>
must hold a Ph.D. or possess equivalent experience.<br>
