Rhodamine dye is often used by ecologists and hydrologists to trace the movement of water and dissolved substances in streams and lakes. Here, rhodamine is being added to trace the movement of the stream water into the lake. The cold stream water (7 C) will plunge into the warmer lake beneath the surface. The distribution of the non-toxic dye can be measured with a fluorometer. Photo, Sepember 2004.
