Water is often removed from streams for irrigation and other uses. Here, the Big Lost River in south-central Idaho (USA) has been completely de-watered by an upstream dam, and by withdrawals for spray irrigation (inset). These seasonal withdrawals completely destroy habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms. Photo, July 2004.
