The GLAD800 (Global Lake Drilling to 800 m) drill rig assembled at the marina on Bear Lake, Utah/Idaho. This rig (now named the D/V Kerry Kelts) consists of 8, 20’ standard international shipping containers filled with foam and water (separated by an air bag) and connected at the corners. The drill rig is a standard CS-1500 diamond coring rig that has been extensively modified to accommodate standard Ocean Dilling Project (ODP) tools including hydraulic piston core (HPC) and diamond core bits for sampling sediments of different composition and stiffness. Sediment is collected in standard ODP plastic liners. The barge was designed to anchor in water depths up to 200 m, although it now can accommodate dynamic positioning (outboard motors) for coring in deeper water. The system is modular and can be transported in the 20’ shipping containers all over the world and to remote locations. The GLAD800 system is owned and operated by DOSECC, headquartered in Salt Lake City (www.dosec.org).
