This is a color version of a B&W figure (Fig. 1) in our review paper on nutrient fluxes. It shows the reduction in concentration around a nutrient-absorbing, spherical cell in stagnant water (left panel), when the cell is moving left to right (middle panel) and when it is in a simple, irrotational shear field (right panel).
