Periphyton grows in the biofilm community in streams, lakes, and wetlands. A battery-powered electric drill and wire brush can be used effectively to quantitatively sample this community. A 25-mm plastic tube, with neoprene rubber glued to the lower flange, can be pressed against the solid surface, and the periphyton removed with the brush. The suspended material can then be removed from the tube with an eye dropper.
