A fisherman launches a large cast net into the Amazon River near Iquitos, Peru (1973). Despite the low gradient of only a few mm/km, the main channel of the Amazon River has a high velocity (> 1 m/sec). The fisherman caught a 20-cm armored catfish with barbels perhaps 50 cm long.
