Brine shrimp are the dominant macroinvertebrate in many hypersaline lakes and ponds. The shrimp shown here, Artemia franciscana, was from the Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA. Photo by Fred Post. Females produce resting eggs, or cysts, that can remain viable for hundreds of years in the sediments until conditions become right for hatching.
