A graduate student holds a set of experimental substrates that were used to measure nutrient limitation in a Sawtooth Mountain stream. Each cannister contains agar and either nitrogen or phosphorus. These nutrients diffuse through a porous glass disk (white), and if limiting, stimulate algal growth.
