Large boulders in the Mameyes River in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. Torrential rains and high river discharges transport smaller sediments and boulders from the stream, leaving behind huge boulders that form the habitat for stream organisms. During low flows, the small stream percolates between the boulders and pools where shrimp and other invertebrates live.
