Sunken gold dredge, River Inambari, Peru
A sunken gold dredge lies in the bed of the Rio Inambari. The story we were told is that the dredge had been brought in in pieces with mules over the Andes and reassembled at the river. The first day of dredging had yielded incredible quantities of gold and the miners were celebrating that night when a huge flood hit the dredge, washed it a away and destroyed it. Whether this is true or not I don't know, but it is clear that someone made a huge effort to extract gold from the river many, many years ago.
