      (Photo credit: Seacology). Many gelatinous organisms form large blooms in nutrient poor, open ocean environments, but some taxa, such as salps pictured here off the coast of New Zealand, can produce very large fecal pellets that sink rapidly thereby increasing carbon export to depth.
