A researcher collects algae (Duneliella rubens) from the north arm (Gunnison Bay) of the Great Salt Lake. The rocks are the fill material for the Souther Pacific Railway causeway that crosses the lake and divides it into two parts. The north part shown here is saturated with salt, containing about 300 g/L (ca. 300 ppt). The red color is from the Dunelliela and also from red pigmented Archaea--bacteria-like organisms.
