In the late 1800s and early 1900s settlers in the Salt Valley built an extensive system of canals to reduce flooding and for irrigation. The Surplus Canal, one of the first, diverts water from the Jordan River and primarily takes it to wetlands and agricultural fields on the south shore of Farmington Bay (Great Salt Lake). The water can, however, be diverted directly to Gilbert Bay (main lake).
