Several thousand California sea lion males (Zalophus californianus) hauled out on an Oregon coast beach, 12-10-2009. As population has grown dramatically over the last 30 years, males migrate as far north as SE Alaska. They migrate inland to at least Bonneville Dam (150 river miles) on the Columbia River and Ballard Locks in Seattle, Washington (also about 150 miles inland), preying on anadromous salmonids, Pacific lamprey, smelt, white sturgeon, and possibly other species September - May. They then return to breeding grounds in California June - August. Females rarely migrate north of California.
