Golden dorado (Dourado)inhabit rivers and streams in Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil. They are a voracious predator with razor sharp teeth. They have become a popular sport fish, and they are prized for eating as well. Large individuals can growth to 15-20 kg. Although their behavior is much like that of trout in large rivers, they are unrelated to salmonids but rather are members of the characin family that has hundreds of species in South American.

This fish shown here was caught on a fly in the Parana River floodplain near Goya, Argentina.
