Oak River once carried a portion of the Mississippi and flourished as freshwater habitat. Its rumored the pirate Jean Lafitte once sailed Oak River to New Orleans. The habitat has suffered because of the Mississippi River Commission and ACoE, when you decouple the river from its source, saltwater moves in.
