Larvae of the Clear Lake gnat, Chaoborus astictopus, are predators. The 4th instar stage shown here is about 10-mm (3/8") long and feeds on other zooplankton. It is a non-biting midge that sometimes reaches nuisance densities along shorelines after it emerges as an adult. This specimen was collected in Clear Lake, California.
