In super-cooled water, ice platelets can attach to solid surfaces in the bottoms of streams and rivers and form "anchor ice". This photo shows some forming in Smithfield Creek in northern Utah (USA). When anchor ice completely covers the bottom of a stream it will stop water from moving into the interstitial spaces in the stream bed, and smother aquatic organisms.
