Heterotrophic dinoflagellate, Gyrodinium sp., greatly distended after ingesting a long chain of the pelagic diatom Thalassiosira sp. Observed in a sample collected off the Oregon coast in a diatom bloom during upwelling season. July 2003, 10 m depth, off Heceta Head, slope station, 7.2 ug chl-a/liter. Lugol fixed/light microscopy
