Heterotrophic Gyrodinium sp. dinoflagellate observed in a bloom of centric diatoms, July 2004, Western Arctic Ocean. These large non-thecate dinoflagellates are a significant component of the total microzooplankton biomass in arctic and subarctic regions, prey on bloom-forming diatoms, and are food for mesozooplankton.
