Large sized heterotrophic Gyrodinium spp. are common in arctic/subarctic seas where diatom blooms regularly occur. These heterotrophic dinoflagellates prey on diatom cells and chains by direct ingestion. Collected in a mixed species diatom bloom in the southern Bering Sea in April 2008. Lugol fixed/light microscopy.
