When strong winds blow across a lake, spiral circulation cells are created. The parallel cells rotate, and surface foam is trapped where the water downwells. This creates streaks of foam.


The Great Salt Lake (Utah, USA)has high quantities of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and this allows large amounts of foam. In this picture, it is demonstrating the existence of Langmuir circulation cells.
