The farthest lakes in this photo are lake 29 (left) and lake 31 (right). Both are shallow (<3 m) thermokarst lakes in the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area in northern Alaska. These lakes joined in about 2002 by thermokarst erosion of their shorelines. Lake 31 was originally at a higher elevation and now is about 1 m lower, significantly reducing its volume and now allowing it to freeze solid in some years. Lake coalescence and complete drainage is a common process shaping the landscape of this region.
