A student from the College of Natural Resources at Utah State University deploys a Kemmerer water sampling bottle to study the chemistry of the Great Salt Lake. The deeper part of the lake has a deep-brine layer (i.e. monimolimnion). Like other water samplers, the Kemmerer can be lowered to depth in an open position and then a messenger is sent down the line to trip a mechanism that closes the caps on both ends. When brought to the surface the water from that depth can be analyzed for nutrients, metals, phytoplankton, bacteria and other parameters.
