Salt marsh amphipod, Ulorchestia spartinophilia. This amphipod is (about 9 mm long for this specimen) is a very common inhabitant of the inner parts of leaf sheaths of smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. It is likely to be a cryptic shredder on dead shoots, and appears to obtain its nutrition from a combination of leaf tissue, fungal tissue, and epiphytic microbes.
