Transmission electron micrograph of lytic hyphae of Phaeosphaeria spartinicola, an ascomycete that carries out decay of smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) in the salt marsh. This hyphae is in the process of digesting the lignocellulose of fiber cells of a leaf blade of smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. Photo from old ASLO slide collection; taken by S. Newell; scanned by K.L. Schulz.
