Mortimer, a scientist currently emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, who after obtaining a Ph.D. in genetics and working during World War II (England) on predicting waves, moved to the U.S. and became a pioneering physical limnologist, especially known for his work on the Laurentian Great Lakes.
