Title : Ecomicrobiological Studies of a lentic water body of Jabalpur city with special reference to its pollution stresses.



The present study was aimed to assess the pollution stresses on lentic water body of Jabalpur city, ,India. The studies were carried out for various physico- chemical parameters and some microbiological parameters for thee years. The sampling were carried out from January 1992 to December 1994. The physico chemical and biological analysis of the water samples was done according to the methods given by APHA(1985). Various parameters which were studied in detail were pH, temperature, transparency, total alkalinity ,chloride content, calcium hardness, total hardness, magnesium hardness, total solids, suspended solids and dissolved solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand ,dissolved oxygen, phosphate and nitrate content.

On the basis of this results Water Quality Index(WQI) was applied , WQI shows the gradual increase in pollution level during course of studies. Planktonic studies were also observed the occurrence of phyto plankton and zooplankton species were observed qualitatively and quantitatively. On the basis of this Sequential Comparison Index(SCI), Shanon’s diversity Index, Pielou’s diversity Index and Simpson’s dominance Index was also calculated. The result shows that gradual depletion of occurrence of microbial organisms was taken place. Apart from above studies there is a unique tradition in India that people drop a number of idols made up of clay, toxic paints, colors, bamboos and different types of soils in their festivals such as ‘Dashera’ and’ Anant Chaturdasi’ every year. Studies were carried out to observed the diurnal variation in water quality of lake and microbial disorders at the interval of every four hours during dropping of idols. Various recommendations and suggestions are given to the local authorities and people residing the lake so as to reduce to pollution level of the lake.
