PHOTO-OXIDATION POTENTIAL IN SOUTHERN QUEBEC LAKES

The photo-oxidation potential (POP) of epilimnetic waters was measured in 20 southern Quebec lakes varying in trophic status and chemical properties using a recently proposed erioglaucine assay. POP varied by 2 orders of magnitude among lakes and was strongly inversely correlated with DOC content (r=0.8) and positively correlated with nitrate concentration, even at low nitrate concentrations (<4 μM). Because of the multiple cross-correlations among many limnological variables, oligotrophic lakes showed the highest photo-oxidation potential of all suggesting that they are the most vulnerable to short-term changes in ultra-violet radiation regime.
