Surf Zone Water Quality at Huntington Beach: from World War II to the Present
image
We present nearly 50 years of water quality data for the surf zone at Huntington Beach in southern California. Historical data, together with data from recent high frequency sampling studies, reveal that surf zone water quality varies over time scales that span at least seven orders of magnitude, from minutes to decades. The human and natural processes responsible for this variability, and the coastal management implications, are presented and discussed.
