|TRANSFER OF CAROTENOIDS FROM PHYTOPLANKTON TO COPEPODS IN A BALTIC SEA MESOCOSM EXPERIMENT|
|A summer experiment was performed in the brackish eutrophicated Baltic Sea Proper. Nine floating mesocosms were filled with ca 1500L seawater, pre-sieved through a 100 micrometer net. We fertilised the mesocosms with nitrogen, phosphorus and silica (NPSi treatment), nitrogen and phosphorus only (NP treatment), or none of these (Zero treatment). The daily doses were 12 micromolar silicate, 4 micromolar nitrate, and 0.25 micromolar orthophosphate corresponding to the molar ratios 48:16:1. When blooms of diatoms (NPSi treatment) and flagellates (NP treatment) were established, copepods from local areas were transferred to each of the mesocosms.
For 7 days, we followed the qualitative and quantitative transfer of carotenoids from phytoplankton to the grazing copepods. Pigment analyses were made with HPLC.
