SEDIMENT ACCUMULATION IN A MOUNTAIN RESERVOIR SYSTEM: NOGUERA PALLARESA RIVER, NE SPAIN

The aim of the MORE project is to evaluate the importance of the mechanisms that contribute to the formation of sediments in dams. This work is being simultaneously carried out in air, water, suspended mater and bottom sediment from the Noguera-Pallaresa reservoir system including the dams of Sant Antoni (184 hm3), Cellers (23 hm3) and Camarasa (102 hm3) which were built in 1916, 1935 and 1922 respectively. This river is an important tributary to the Segre River with a 1500 hm3/y flow, and crosses the calcareous Pre-Pyrenean range. Accumulation rates have been estimated for some sediment cores by using 210Pb, 137Cs, 7Be and 234Th as radiotracers via high resolution alpha and gamma spectrometry. 210Pb activities showed variable profiles reflecting rapid accumulation rates and high variability of the sedimentation processes. 137Cs activity profiles showed distributions difficult to resolve. 7Be was detected only in few cases. We also concluded that 234Th is not a good radiotracer for this environment. Side-scan sonar surveys and historical bathymetry were used to help in the interpretation of profiles.
