METABOLIC PATHWAYS OF PRIMARY PRODUCTS IN LAKES
image
An energetic examination of the paradigm that "fish eat zooplankton eat phytoplankton" shows that this can hold only in large lakes and the oceans and, even then, only at very low levels of biomass. Elsewhere, energy flow in most lakes occurs with the significant, if not dominant, intervention of the littoral/sublittoral benthos.
