Special Student Events
Student Roundtable Meeting
A Student Meeting will take place over lunch or refreshments during the conference. This meeting is an informal two-way discussion moderated by the ASLO student representatives, where we will discuss current and future ASLO initiatives and obtain your feedback. All students are encouraged to attend.
Student Workshops
Due to their success at previous ASLO meetings, several Student Workshops will be held over lunch at the 2008 Summer Meeting. Scientists from a variety of backgrounds will discuss topics in career development (e.g., publication and grant writing, communicating science, different career paths, etc.). These workshops will be informal in nature, providing an “ice-breaker” for students to mingle with senior scientists. A limited number of lunches will be provided to students who pre-register for the workshops. Further details about the workshops and registration procedures will be provided at a later date.
St. John's Haunted Hike
Join the Reverend Thomas Wyckham Jarvis, Esq., on a hike through some of the lesser-known (and haunted!) nooks and crannies of St. John's. Explore the secrets that lie in wait in the darkest corners of one of North America's oldest cities. Hear tales of public hangings, duels, and horrific murders, forgotten cemeteries and unmarked graves, and perhaps meet the headless captain, first seen in 1745, searching for his lady love. All students are invited to partake in this unique St. John's experience. Further details will be provided at a later date.
George Street Pub Crawl (Student Mixer)
Join your fellow students and enjoy George Street! In the heart of downtown St. John's (and a stone's throw from the conference venue), George Street is reputed to have the most bars per square foot of any street in North America. At night, the street is closed to traffic and is undoubtedly the premier destination for those who enjoy an evening of live music and cold draught. Details on the George Street Pub Crawl will be provided at a later date.
