Photo Contest
A photo contest will highlight the joint 2010 joint ASLO/NABS meeting in Santa Fe. This event will celebrate photographers in the ASLO and North American Benthological Society communities and encourage contributions to the image libraries in both societies for educational non-profit use. The photos will be displayed at a photo exhibit open to the public as an outreach activity to Santa Fe’s community. The contest will be co-sponsored by Freshwaters Illustrated (FI), organizers of which will help coordinate the exhibition and donate prizes. Submissions will be accepted from now until 9 May 2010. The winner will be announced at the banquet on Wednesday, 9 June.
Rules and prizes for the contest:
- Only one photo per participant can be entered in the contest (but we hope that you contribute many pictures to the Image Libraries (http://www.aslo.org/photopost; http://www.benthos.org).
- The photograph must relate to an aquatic theme and be in digital format.
- A descriptive caption must accompany the photo.
- Submissions may be included in the ASLO and NABS image libraries, can be freely distributed by ASLO, NABS, and FI for educational non-profit purposes, and included in a NABS/ASLO calendar.
Participation in the contest implies that you agree to these terms. (You are giving ASLO, NABS, and FI a non-exclusive right to use and make available on the web for educational non-profit purposes).
E-mail images and captions to Freshwaters Illustrated (photos@freshwatersillustrated.org) before midnight, 9 May 2010. Identify yourself as an ASLO or NABS member (or both). Send the highest resolution you have, in jpg format. (Use sRGB, if possible.) Images in other color spaces will be converted to sRGB using Photoshop CS2 defaults.
Photos will be printed and displayed at the joint ASLO/NABS 2010 meeting in Santa Fe and the winning photos will be determined by votes gathered at the photo exhibit. With the permission of the photographer, the photos may be included at the silent auction at the banquet to raise money for the two society’s student activities.
Prizes will be awarded to the top photographers and will include:
- An underwater digital camera
- A free annual membership to ASLO or NABSA
- A free annual membership to Freshwaters Illustrated.
Calendars
A calendar will be produced from winning photos. The calendars can be purchased during on-line registration and at the meeting. Calendars from the winning images at the Santa Fe meeting will be available at the 2011 meetings of both societies. The 2010-11, 18-Month NABS/ASLO Calendar featuring 18 top photos from NABS and ASLO photo competitions (July 2010 through December 2011) will be available for $17.00.
