THE FORMATION OF AN ACTIVE YOUTH ORGANIZATION TO PROMOTE COASTAL ZONE EDUCATION IN BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA
Coastal Zone Canada '98 Youth Conference, held in Victoria in August 1998 was conference planned by students, for the education of young people on coastal zone issues. Youth, aged 16-24, attended and discussed concerns and
issues relating to coastal zone management. The format of the conference was "non-traditional", each day was a series of workshops which promoted interaction and open discussions. Participants took away with them valuable
and realistic knowledge about how to make changes in their community.
One of the results of this conference was the formation of an organization, Youth Coastal Action Network. Many of the participants from the youth conference are members of this organization. The objective of YouthCAN is to engage youth in the conservation and restoration of coastal environments, and to generate respect for oceans and other aquatic environments. With support from the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans, YouthCAN hopes
to achieve these objectives by developing a long-term, interactive, and dynamic curriculum to be introduced in the BC secondary school system. Financial support has already been awarded, and YouthCAN hopes to enter the schools as early as Jan 1999. They will help schools identify a coastal concern in their community, and put in place a long-term program to address this concern.
