These programs have successfully integrated ocean research and K-12 education at both the student and teacher levels. Participants are enriched in their discovery of the relevancy, excitement and knowledge encompassing the ocean sciences. Programs are interactive and interdisciplinary providing hands-on instruction in exploring the ocean sciences via research cruises, field trips, research projects, and web-based technologies. The strengths of these programs are due largely to the cooperative efforts of a dedicated team of teachers, graduate students, and ocean scientists working together to enhance secondary science education. Other strengths include one-to-one mentoring between pre-college students and accomplished research scientists; multi-disciplinary, hands-on experiences in both laboratory and field environments; and career preparation and profiles in the sciences. The design, applications, and delivery of these programs will be highlighted during this presentation. These programs have contributed not only to furthering the interest and motivation of K-12 students and teachers, but also to the informal education of the general public.
