THE F.I.R.S.T. PROGRAM: FEMALE INITIATION INTO RESEARCH IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
The F.I.R.S.T. Program, sponsored by funds from the CAREER Program of the Ocean Sciences Division of the National Science Foundation, is designed to provide research experiences to high school girls in fields such as the
physical and geosciences, where females have been traditionally underrepresented. Participants in this program are supervised both by a female graduate student and female faculty member, allowing the students an opportunity to interact with and observe women in two phases of their professional development. Under the supervision of their mentors, students participate in field and laboratory work and in consultation with their advisors, interns complete a research project. At the program's conclusion, the girls present results of their study to faculty and student F.I.R.S.T. participants.
During each of the past two summers, a small (5-7) group of local high school girls have been hosted by female scientists at the College of William and Mary's School of Marine Science/Virginia Institute of Marine Science. A description of the program's goals and an overview of the research conducted by participants in the program will be presented.
