USING AQUATIC ORGANISMS RESEARCH TO EDUCATE UNDERGRADUATES IN MOSCOW STATE UNIVERSITY, RUSSIA
 
Undergraduate students majoring in biology are actively involved in doing research in laboratories of Moscow University as well as in doing field research at various field stations (at the coast of the White Sea, at the man-made reservoir called the Mozhaiskoe More etc.). Students are involved in close cooperation with Russian Academy of Sciences and they have an opportunity to participate in oceanic expeditions on board scientific ships. Students of the second year have to choose one of the department of the School of Biology, which becomes the basic structural unit of Moscow University responsible for their further training. There are several departments which are actively involved in ocean and freshwater research. Among these departments are: Department of Hydrobiology, Department of Ichthyology, Department of Vertebrate Zoology and General Ecology, Department of Invertebrate Zoology, Department of Algology and Mycology, Department of Cell Physiology and Immunology, Department of Microbiology, and some others. Students who major in geology, geography, physics and chemistry also have incresing interest in ocean and freshwater research. The best papers by the students are presented at the annual student conference. The conference is called the Lomonosov conference after the name of the founder of Moscow University, Prof. M.V.Lomonosov (1711-1765).
